Gennady Golovkin gave fans exactly what they wanted to see in stopping Willie Monroe Jr. last night in front of a wild crowd of 12,372 in Inglewood, California. Golovkin now 33-0 (30 KO's) put his opponent down three times during the fight as he showed again just how unstoppable he is at Middleweight.
Coming in to this fight there were a lot of fans who were saying 'GGG' would struggle with the elusive style of Monroe. The slick American came to the ring with a record of 19-1 (6 KO's) and his southpaw style presented Golovkin with a problem he had yet to face as a pro. He went to work as usual in his cold hearted, serial killer fashion as he stalked Monroe and immediatley began backing him up. In round two he connected a crushing left hand that robbed Monroe of his senses and sent him to the canvass. Monroe bravely got up to fight on, only to find himself on the canvass again after a flurry of punches. Monroe again got up and was staggered by a huge shot from Golovkin, but he survived the round just about.
Round 3 saw a change of tactics from Monroe who opted to stop moving so much and stay in the pocket where he found some success in landing some nice shots. The nice moments he had in this round though were still not enough to win the round as Golovkin continued to savage his opponent with aggression. Monroe continued his turn around in round four and was able to land shots in great succession to Golovkin, who was stationary in front of his opponent and wasn't throwing a lot of punches. Monroe fought well enough to win the fourth round.
Golovkin came raging out like a bull for the fifth round as he immediatly started to land powerful left hooks to the body and big right hands to the head. Golovkin hurt Monroe early in the round but Monroe finsihed the round well, finding success with the straight left and right hook from his southpaw stance. In his corner after the fifth round Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez urged his fighter to up his game and not to allow Monroe to continue to get his shots off. Golovkin took to Sanchez's calls straight away and once again looked like the wrecking machine that was dominating the second round.
At the start of the 6th round Golovkin landed a massive left uppercut to the head before following up with two left hooks that found his opponent on the canvass for the thrird time in the fight. Monroe stayed on the canvass until the count of 9 and just about made it to his feet for the count of 10. Referee Jack Riess gave him the benefit of the doubt to say he beat the count but informed Monroe he was almost counted out. It was at this point Reiss asked Monroe if he wanted to continue, to which he replied "no". I feel it was a good time for the fight to be stopped as it was a near certainty that Golovkin would have completely knocked Monroe out in a gruesome knock out.
Golovkin made his 14th consecutive straight defence of his middleweight title and is closing in on Bernard Hopkins record of 20 straight defences. GGG also possesses the highest KO ratio of any Middleweight champion in boxing history! After the fight he has this to say - "I want big fight now. I am waiting for Miguel (Cotto) and Canelo. I respect Andre Ward, a great athlete. First of all. i say Canelo and Cotto. After that, Andre Ward."
