Unbeaten pound for pound king Floyd 'MONEY' Mayweather 48-0 (26 KO's) has revealed he is looking to stack the card for his final fight with champions. Mayweather has gone out and personally invited Manny Pacquiao to fight on his undercard in the hope that they can again create a huge buzz around the event together.
Mayweather had this to say on 'The Pacman' fighting on his September bill, "I look forward to Pacquiao fighting on my undercard as part of a double header. We both could make some good money. He could fight somebody solid and I could fight somebody solid. He aint gotta fight somebody thats unbelievable but he could fight a solid competitor. I think together we could do some good numbers."
When asked if he thinks hes answered the critics who have said he is ducking the best fighters, Mayweather said "They always come up with a new guy. My last fight im fighting who I want to fight. Im not fighting (Mayweather pauses) im gunna tune in a guy whos solid of course. I mean he may not be solid in some people's eyes but he's gunna be a solid competitor. For my last hurrah I'd like to put a lot of champions on the undercard."
So there you have it, Floyd will be fighting someone who may not be seen as 'Elite' in his final fight. He is looking to face someone who could be seen as a step down from his last few opponents, but is looking to counter that fact by stacking the undercard with top names. It appears a smart move by Mayweather to get good PPV numbers. I guess that pretty much rules out him fighting some of the guys I mentioned in a previous article. Those guys included Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, 'Canelo' Alvarez & Gennady Golovkin.
After his latest revalation im going to have a look at some potential opponents in light of what Floyd had to say about his opponent for September. As he is looking for a 'Solid' opponent who may not fall in to being classed as up there with the P4P best, we narrow down potential opponents.
KELL BROOK 34-0 (23 KO's) -
Britains IBF Welterweight champion is surely now one of the leading candidates to fight Floyd. He is not yet a big name in the sport and has yet to prove himself against the top names in the sport. He claimed a good win over Shawn Porter in the US to claim the title in what was a very close fight.
DANNY GARCIA 30-0 (17 KO's) -
Danny Garcia has held the title of being the number one Light Welterweight in the world for a few years now. However, he is far from perfect and was lucky to escape with his unbeaten record when defending against fringe contender Mauricio Harrera last year, winning a highly controversial majority decision. He also appeared to have been beaten by Lamont Peterson easily enough in his last fight, again escaping with a majority decision victory. He is moving up to Welterweight and in my eyes is the front runner for the fight.
LUCAS MATTHYSSE 37-3 (34 KO's) -
The Argentinian KO artist would provide Mayweather with a good fighter who is borderline Elite. He has some good crushing wins over the likes of Lamont Peterson, Ajose Olusegun & Humberto Soto. However he can be outboxed as Danny Garcia showed. Still, Matthysse has responded well since then, in his last fight defeating Ruslan Provodnikov in the fight of the year so far. He is always in exciting fights so would be an appealing choice.
LAMONT PETERSON 33-3 (17 KO's) -
Peterson has victory's over good names such as Amir Khan, Kendall Holt & Dierry Jean. He should have another against Danny Garcia only to be totally robbed of a career best win. He is certaintly beatable as shown by Matthysse who knocked him out in 3 round and Tim Bradley who won a wide decision to take his unbeaten record. He wouldn't be seen as a strong opponent and who would back him? One thing he does have going for him is that his name is currently on the up after how he handled Garcia.
KEITH THURMAN 25-0 (21 KO's) -
Thurman is the new kid on the block. He has size, speed and power. He is a man that very few fighters want to step in to the ring with, simply because his name isn't big enough to match his fighting ability just yet. This fight would be a good sell, but he couldn't be seen as 'just' a 'strong competitor'. If Mayweather were to choose this as his farewell fight he would be answering more critics, which he says this fight isn't about. I think Thurman will be too good to take on just yet, with a few more good wins this could be a superfight!
ANDRE BERTO 30-3 (23 KO's) -
Berto was highly touted when he was coming up o be the next great welterweight. He raced to 27-0 making 5 defences of his WBC Welterweight title. Unfortunatley he failed to cross over in to a star after losses to Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass. In his last fight he beat Josesito Lopez by KO in round 6 of a fight he was struggling. He is advised by Al Haymon so there is a great chance he will get the nod for September.
BRANDON RIOS 33-2-1 (24 KO's) -
Crude slugger Rios would be an unpopular choice. He was schooled by Manny Pacquiao in his comeback fight following the KO loss the Marquez. He has often been outboxed and has a couple of decisions on his record that should be losses. He is on the back of winning the decider of his trilogy with Mike Alvarado who he blew away in 3 rounds this year. This win has put him in to a good position. He is a decent name who is very beatable and one dimensional. Kell Brook is heavily linked to fighting him around September time. The Mayweather fight would be a no brainer for Rios to take, I couldn't see him winning a round though!
VERDICT: I feel as though the most likely opponents will be out of Kell Brook, Danny Garcia & Andre Berto. For me I'd rather see Brook get the nod before the others. Time will tell who gets the oppertunity to earn life changing money against the best fighter of his generation. I hope you enjoyed this article and would be very interested to see who you think should/will get the fight.
