Floyd Mayweather Jr. cemented his status as the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter of his generation last night with a unanimous decision victory over Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout was being billed by many as the biggest fight of all time. Having been 6 years in the making we finally got to witness something we never thought we would see. It certaintly was the richest fight in the history of the sport. Mayweather was 47-0 coming in to the fight having never tasted defeat. Many believed 'PACMAN' was the man to provide him with the first blemish on his perfect record.
Following the national anthems of Mexico, Philippines & Jamie Foxx's terrible version of the American anthem, it was time for the big one. Sporting a 57-5-2 record, that includes being the number 1 fighter in the world in a record 8 weight classes, Pacquiao come to the ring full of smiles. Carrying the hopes of his countrymen and so many more from around the world, the crowd was hugely in favour of the PACMAN. Floyd Mayweather entered the ring with his TMT entourage including pop sensation Justin Bieber. There was a mixed reception for 'Money' as he made his way to the ring. Michael Buffer announced Pacquiao. Jimmy Lennon Jr announced Mayweather. Kenny Bayless was the man in the middle. Both men appeared nervous as the met in the centre of the ring to touch gloves. The first round both fighters were clearly feeling each other out. However it was Mayweather who clearly landed the telling punches and took command from the off. The next 2 rounds followed the same suit, whenever Pacquiao would spring to life on the offensive, Floyd would hold and tie him up on the inside immediatley. Round 4 was Manny's first good round of the fight. he asserted himself and let the combinations fly when he backed Floyd to the ropes. Floyd responded immediatley and commanded centre of the ring and began beating Pacquiao to the punch. Manny managed to get his punches off again in the next round to the roars of the crowd every time he would let off his lighting fast combinations.
However, Floyd was blocking almost all of the punches, his shoulder roll proving as reliable as always. He began to jab a lot more in the second half of the fight, re-setting and attacks that Pacquiao had been waiting to get going. the right hand began landing hard and often. Mayweather's boxing IQ proving once again he's the smartest fighter in the sport. Manny refused to lie down and tried to burst forward into attacks, most of the time hitting thin air, occasionally getting through. Once the final bell rang both fighters raised their hands, but there could only be one winner. Buffer & Lennon Jr together announced the scorecards; 116-112, 116-112 & 118-112 all three to the winner by unanimous decision and the new WBC, WBA, WBO Welterweight Champion of the World, Floyd 'Money' Mayweather.
